He did not consider his work done, however, until he had revised that thousand words down to about three hundred. His sentences were short. His words were simple. His constructions were uncomplicated, his prose electrified. He assured himself of its electricity by reading what he wrote each day to his wife.

In nearly everything he wrote, Hemingway depicted courage as he defined the word: Hemingway learned much about literary style, especially about depicting human speech authentically, from Stein. Perhaps no other twentieth century American author has been the spiritual progenitor to as many notable literary offspring.
